Estrutura
Sujeito + was/were + verbo com -ing
- I / He / She / It → was + -ing
- You / We / They → were + -ing
Exemplo: She was reading when I arrived.
Quando usar o Past Continuous
- Ação em progresso no passado: At 8 PM last night, I was watching TV. (Às 20h ontem, eu estava assistindo TV.)
- Ação interrompida por outra: I was cooking when the phone rang. (Eu estava cozinhando quando o telefone tocou.)
- Duas ações simultâneas no passado: While she was studying, he was playing video games. (Enquanto ela estava estudando, ele estava jogando videogame.)
- Cenário ou contexto de uma história: The sun was shining and birds were singing. (O sol estava brilhando e os pássaros estavam cantando.)
- Ações repetidas ou irritantes no passado (com always/constantly): He was always complaining about his job. (Ele estava sempre reclamando do trabalho.)
Past Continuous vs. Simple Past
A diferença é fundamental:
| Tempo | Uso | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Past Continuous | Ação em andamento (duração) | I was walking to work. |
| Simple Past | Ação concluída (evento pontual) | I walked to work. |
Regra prática: Use when com Simple Past (ação que interrompe) e while com Past Continuous (ação em andamento).
✅ I was sleeping when the alarm rang.
✅ While I was sleeping, the alarm rang.
Formas Negativa e Interrogativa
Negativa
Sujeito + was/were + not + verbo com -ing
- I wasn't working yesterday. (Eu não estava trabalhando ontem.)
- They weren't paying attention. (Eles não estavam prestando atenção.)
Interrogativa
Was/Were + sujeito + verbo com -ing?
- Was she sleeping? (Ela estava dormindo?)
- Were they playing soccer? (Eles estavam jogando futebol?)
- What were you doing at 10 AM?

- was/were + -ing → ação em progresso no passado
- when + Simple Past → interrupção
- while + Past Continuous → ação simultânea
- Cuidado com stative verbs — eles ficam no Simple Past
- Não confunda was (I/he/she/it) com were (you/we/they)
