Second Conditional: Como Falar de Situações Hipotéticas em Inglês

O que é a Second Conditional?

A Second Conditional é usada para falar de situações hipotéticas, improváveis ou irreais no presente ou futuro. É aquela estrutura clássica do "se eu fosse você..." ou "se eu tivesse dinheiro...".

Diferente da First Conditional (que trata de possibilidades reais), a Second Conditional lida com cenários que não são factuais — pelo menos não agora.

Quando usar a Second Conditional

• Situações irreais no presente: If I were rich, I would buy a house on the beach. (Não sou rico.)
• Situações improváveis no futuro: If she won the lottery, she would quit her job. (É pouco provável que ela ganhe.)
• Conselhos: If I were you, I would talk to him. (Eu não sou você.)
• Perguntas hipotéticas: What would you do if you lost your job?

Atenção ao verbo "to be"

Na Second Conditional, o verbo to be usa "were" para todas as pessoas em contextos formais e padrão:

• If I were taller, I would play basketball.
• If she were here, she would help us.
• If he were the boss, things would be different.

No inglês informal, muitas pessoas usam "was" com I/he/she/it, mas em provas e contextos profissionais, prefira sempre "were".

Would, Could e Might

O modal na oração principal muda o sentido:
